Systems to meet certification system standards

Certifications to the high end sustainability systems often revolves around a physical demonstration rather than having an adequate documented system.  Standards like:

  • Forest Stewardship Council. (FSC)
  • Australian Forestry Standard (AFS)
  • Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)
  • Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture
  • Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS)
  • Bonsucro (Sustainable Sugar Cane)

Any company  approaching these standards for the first time needs to understand what these so called ‘verifiers’ are and how they are demonstrated within the management unit under certification.

This service will help a company understand what the gaps in their current system are and how they can be bridged to meet these certification standards at audit time.

NOTE.  Where these standards have complex chain of custody certification requirements we can help with that too!

Management planning

Most sustainability standards require some form of management planning or system. The requirements of the standards often stipulate what should be in the plans. More often than not operations fall into a trap of producing discrete management plans rather than looking at their current operations and documentation to satisfy the required management planning or systems elements. By following a simple analytical process it’s possible to produce a plan consisting of very few pages that meets the requirements of the standard. Then by following some simple conventions it is possible to link parts of the existing system to that plan by reference to other documents within the operations existing business.
In this way Pinnacle Quality can help you develop a simple plan to meet sustainability certification standard.

High conservation values (HCV) approaches

The concept of special values and high conservation values (HCV) encompasses a range of issues that the operation may impact upon and that need to be managed. Many sustainability standards base their requirements for management of special values on existing frameworks and in some cases the framework is regionalized. In all cases the concept of special values requires that:
• The values are known,
• The values are understood and a strategy is in place to manage these values such that they are preserved and even enhanced. Typically new entrants to sustainability certification consider high conservation values as equating to rare and endangered species or ecosystems. Whist these are components of special values management they are not exclusive.
Pinnacle Quality will work with the client to identify the special values or high conservation values impacted by the business and to help the client understand these impacts and potential management strategies to mitigate those impacts.
Note: Pinnacle Quality have been involved in developing HCV strategies for individual business both large and small across many countries and operations. In addition Kevin OGrady of Pinnacle Quality has been in involved, as inaugural chairman, in the development of a national approach to high conservation values management in Australian forestry via FSC Australia see

Disputes processes

The concept of the disputes process or a complaints process is common to most of the sustainability standards, especially those under the ISEAL alliance. This is because these standards are often predicated on the principle of involvement of a wide range of stakeholders.

Businesses often have a very negative approach to a disputes or complaints process considering it a necessary evil rather than integral part of sustainability approach.
In fact a framework for efficient disputes and complaints process offer the business and understanding on how to deal constructively with disputes and how to deal with some of the intractable disputes that otherwise may impact upon the certification .
Pinnacle Quality can work with clients to identify the required elements of a disputes process to meet the certification standard in question and assist the client to develop a documented approach that can be incorporated into the business.
Note: Pinnacle Quality has been involved in developing disputes resolution strategies for individual business both large and small across many countries and operations. In addition Kevin OGrady of Pinnacle Quality was the author of the current FSC Australia disputes resolution procedure.

Stakeholder engagement processes

Stakeholder consultation is an important part of the process for most sustainability standard. In some cases the requirement is for the auditor to check the consultation process has been carried and contact the stakeholders themselves to confirm the findings from the consultation.

The requirements for stakeholder consultation are often very specific including the requirement that you also show how stakeholder feedback was taken into consideration and if possible acted upon.

Pinnacle Quality will work with clients to Identify the Required elements of the stakeholder consultation process for their particular business. From there Pinnacle Quality will assist the client to develop a documented approach that can be incorporated into the business and that meets the sustainability standards requirements for stakeholder engagement.
